It was just what the doctor ordered. There was a small storm blowing in so the waves were huge- tons of surfers.
When I got back to my room I checked my email--- I PASSED my COMPS!!!! Woohoo!! I had actually completely forgotten I was waiting for my scores. Its amazing how a trip to Australia will get your mind off of things!
I was able to jump on a $15 shuttle to the airport that picked me up right at my hotel - good thing bc it was raining by this point. I was really sad to be leaving Sydney, it was so fun. I don't know if it's just city rivalry, but everyone talked about how boring and cold Melbourne was when I told them I was going there next. All I could think about was whether my next hostel was going to be another homeless shelter or not.
The Sydney airport was no airport, it was a mall! Is it sad that I was most looking forward to eating the food at the airport? I guess this whole finding restaurants to eat at has been more difficult than I thought it would be (probably because i just dont want to spend $30 for every meal) I feel a bit like a scavenger- or gatherer- whatever those people are called that would go out in search for food and collect berries and stuff. Haha- if I had google right now I would look it up so I don't look like an idiot.
I made it to Melbourne to be greeted by yet another source of interesting conversation. It was pouring down rain and the traffic was awful, so it took over an hour to get to my new hostel- yes I was praying the whole time. My driver was a young Indian man, who apparently just needed someone to listen to him. As I was the only one on the bus I started asking him about things to do in Melbourne- I like to see what people say- none of them have mentioned any of my touristy things I have planned. Hah. Well his answer to that question went from night clubs, to marajuana, to partying in brazil, to his favorite dates, to his philosophies on life. Rather interesting 'mate'. Deciphering his broken English, one thing he said I really enjoyed- he was talking about growing up and traveling alone, and he said "you have to learn how to enjoy yourself". At the risk of sounding a little "eat, pray, love", I do think that is absolutely something I'm learning on this trip- spending so much time alone im definitely finding ways to enjoy myself.
I know you are all anxiously awaiting.... My hostel in Melbourne- So nice, super modern, very clean, and I get to put my tiara back on! I'm in a 6 person girl room with a shared hallway bathroom, but it is very nice.
I met a nice gir,l Faye, from China who is on the bunk above me. She just got her masters degree, and decided to travel some before she started work. Hmm, sounds familiar! We ate dinner together (aka, a microwave meal from 7eleven) in the hostel kitchen.
Faye was in awe that my boyfriend would wake up at 5 am just to talk to me (yes, I'm the luckiest girl in the world)! As I was unpacking a few things (this is the first time I'll sleep in the same bed for two nights in a row!) she was laughing at all of the things I brought- in particular my pink blow dryer. She said, "you brought all of that and didn't bring your sweet boyfriend?" Hahaha awww I would trade my pink blow dryer any day for Andrew to be with me!!
Even though my day didn't start off as I had dreamed, I got some great stories that will make me smile one day!
